3rd History Group Workshop
Practicing Islamic Architecture
6th to 16th February 2012


A Workshop for Developing Design Skills in Building Traditions of the Sub-Continent,was organized by the History Group of the Department of Architecture and Planning NEDUET from 6th till 16th February, 2012. This was the third in the HG Workshop series. The workshop was successfully conducted by Mr.Taimoor Khan Mumtaz, a practicing architect with special interest in Islamic design principles, and a member of Hast-o-Neest, Centre for Traditional Art and Culture.

The practical approach to the use of geometry in design, the hidden logic, the philosophy and variable methods broaden the prospect of the participants with the drawing and development of the models. Arches, Domes, Jalis were all drawn to exactitude through the workshop. References were drawn from the commendable works of the past masters included sketches of Ustad Rahim Bakhsh and Ustad Muhammad Siddique Glotar of Multan and Chiniot respectively. Exuberant exercises were carried out from sketching, drawing, drafting till on site life size model of a traditional space in NED University City Campus.

In continuation of the last two workshops held under the History Group , architect Taimoor Khan Mumtaz and the participants tried to take the workshop a step forward and worked to make permanent elements with cement and concrete. The on site activities were carried out under the guidance and supervision of Ustad Javed, the master mason of the workshop. Working under his auspices, the exposure to the site, materials and hands on construction on site is indeed a priceless experience to the participants. They were determined and devoted and worked whole heartedly that resulted as a wonderful end product that was very well received and acknowledge when exhibited in the closing ceremony.
The practical exposure gave a good understanding of scale, construction materials and molding and casting techniques. The closing ceremony was highlighted by an exhibition of the student’s work and the certificate distribution followed by refreshments.
