Geometry in Design –Spatial Explorations in Tensile and Ribbed Dome structures


A weeklong workshop was organized by The History Group at the Department of Architecture and Planning between 6th – 11th March 2022 entitled ‘Geometry in Design: Spatial Explorations in Geometric Tensile & Ribbed Domed Structures’ conducted by architect Taimoor Khan Mumtaz from Lahore, in financial collaboration with the Endowment Fund Trust for Preservation of the Heritage of Sindh (EFT).

This was the ninth in the series of annual workshops organized by HG-DAPNEDUET, since 2010. The workshop was attended by a total of 37 participants, that included 17 students and two faculty members of the Department of Architecture and Planning NED, 03 DAPNEDUET Alumni, 01 faculty from Nazeer Hussain University, 08 students from the Visual Studies department at the University of Karachi and 01 student from Indus Valley School, 05 nominated professionals from EFT and a practicing interior designer.

The primary aim of this year’s workshop was to equip students with basic geometric tools and concepts through hands-on application of these to design. The workshop included theoretical seminars on key readings and a lecture that was open to the public and was widely attended by numerous institutes.

The closing ceremony was well attended by professionals, students, and representatives from Endowment Fund Trust. Dr. Nilofer Sheikh, Chairperson at Center for Documentation and Conservation of the Heritage of Sindh (EFT) graced the closing ceremony as a Chief Guest. She shared the valuable efforts Endowment Fund Trust is taking efforts of conservation/restoration/preservation/ promotion of the tangible and intangible heritage of Sindh. Dr. Nilofer addressed the audience and expressed her concerns on the depilated conditions of built heritage in Sindh and stressed the role of academia and professionals to preserve the precious heritage of Sindh. The display on the closing day consisted of various models and drawings produced during the week-long exercise and was very well received.
